Evaporative Cooling is an ideal way to bring refreshing,
cool air to your home if you live in a dry, hot place. An evaporative cooler
does what an air conditioner does at a lower cost, and with less electricity.
The evaporative cooler uses only one-fourth the amount of energy that an air
conditioner will!!! Plus, an evaporative cooler does not use refrigerants that
can potentially harm the ozone layer.
An evaporative cooler is also referred to as a swamp cooler
because it evokes the idea of a well-moisturized area, the opposite of a desert:
a wet swamp! These units consist of a box frame and fan, enveloped in water
soaked pads. The pads are made of cellulose or cedar shavings and as the fan
blows out the evaporated water from the pads, a hot, dry area is cooled by the
evaporated water, while simultaneously being refreshed by the moisture. With
the use of cedar pads, a swamp cooler will also provide a light forest fresh
scent, an often overlooked benefit to this cooling method!
Take note that if you live in a hot, humid area, an
evaporative cooler is not for you! The evaporative cooler will not cool, as
there is already existing moisture in the air. The evaporated water works in
dry areas because it takes the warm air surrounding it and cools it by
transferring it through the water. In the case of already moisturized, hot air,
adding more water is not going to cool it down anymore, but simply increase its
water level, leaving your surrounding area feeling exactly the same, if not
worse, from the slight increase in humidity!
When in the correct environment, an evaporative cooler will
effectively cool 15 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. With a swamp cooler you should
also have your windows partly open to bring in fresh air. The coolness will not
escape like with an air conditioner. Some of our swamp coolers even come with
dual features such as air purifiers and humidifiers, making your evaporative
cooling purchase extremely worthwhile. The
NewAir AF-320 Evaporative Cooler is also an air purifier and the
Convair Arctic Breeze 1500 Evaporative Cooler also serves as a
humidifier. Be careful to choose an evaporative cooler that promises to cool a
specific amount of square feet. The
NewAir AF-330 Evaporative Cooler, for example, will cool up to 200
square feet.
Remember not to use your evaporative cooler at the same
time as an air conditioner, as this will be counter-productive. Yet, it is fine
to switch off between an air conditioner and a swamp cooler regarding the
present season. It is essential to remember that if your evaporative cooler has
been off for an extended period of time, drain the water and replace it with a
fresh supply when you are ready to resume use of your cooler. Bacteria will
flourish in the moisture-filled environment if this is not done!
