1. Why choose a portable air conditioner over other cooling methods?
Portable air conditioners are amazing because they can be used in trucks, boats, recreational vehicles, warehouses, and of course, your home! One of the most popular uses for a portable AC is for cooling computer server rooms. These units efficiently cool without having to be permanently installed, for easy movement from room to room. An upgrade from the old-fashioned window air conditioners that are heavy, more expensive, and oftentimes add a not-so-good look to your home in the summertime, the portable air conditioner was invented as a solution to all of these things. Most portable air conditioners have wheels as well, for easy transport and do not require heavy amounts of maintenance. Using a compressor and Freon to cool, humidity levels are simultaneously kept low, while your room will surprisingly be cooled at an extremely efficient rate! All that needs to be taken care of is venting because all portable air conditioners extract hot air. You can vent your PAC through a window or wall with an exhaust hose.
2. How can I decide which PAC is best for the area I would like to cool?
Portable air conditioners are extremely effective as supplemental units for a central HVAC system. Models vary in cooling capabilities, directly related to the unit's BTU (British Thermal Units) rating per hour. A higher BTU rating indicates a higher cooling power. Before making your final PAC choice, make sure you have considered the square footage of the area you would like to cool and compare this with the unit's BTU rating. Here are some suggestions:
7500 BTU will cool 150 sq. ft.
9000 BTU will cool 250 sq. ft.
10000 BTU will cool 300 sq. ft.
12000 BTU will cool 400 sq. ft.
13000 BTU will cool 450 sq. ft.
14000 BTU will cool 500 sq. ft.
You may also be interested in EER ratings, which indicate the energy efficiency of the portable air conditioner. This calculation is a BTU/wattage number, and overall the higher EER rating, the better. This will save you money on energy bills in the long run even if a high EER rated portable air conditioner is initially more costly.
3. What are the best portable air conditioners to choose from?
Some portable air conditioners come with additional functions, for meeting even more of your needs, and making your purchase even more worthwhile! For instance the Soleus LX-140 Portable Air Conditioner comes with heat pump and dehumidifying functions. One of our favorites is the New Air AC 1400E Portable Air Conditioner with 14,000 BTU's.
